Professions Susceptible To COPD
Which professional environments can lead to the development of COPD?
Which Professions and Activities Are Linked to COPD?
Since the nationwide smoking ban came into force several years ago, the air in many places is a lot cleaner and less dangerous in terms of passive smoking than previously, but there are still a range of jobs which can have an increased risk of developing COPD.
According to the Health and Safety Executive some of the most potentially dangerous occupations can be in the following industries:
- Mining
- Construction and Demolition
- Quarries
- Brick making
- Agriculture
- Flour and grain workers
- Food Industry
- Potteries and ceramics
- Stonemasonry
- Textiles
- Plastic and Rubber production
- Foundries
- Petroleum and Petrochemicals
- Workers exposed to Cadmium
That’s not to say that all workers within these industries are at an increased risk, but there are certain activities which can involve potential exposure to dangerous substances, dusts and fumes. These can include:
- Accidents where substances are released into the atmosphere
- Breaking up or disposing of certain substances
- Milling, grinding or sanding of particular substances
- Cutting or polishing
- Transportation and moving of substances
- Cleaning and maintaining areas where substances have been stored
- Burning substances
- Milling, grinding or sanding of particular substances
- Cutting or polishing
While some people can be unaffected by the dust and fumes, some may be more susceptible, and for those who spend long periods of time, in some cases entire working lives within dusty, potentially dangerous environments, reducing the risk of inhaling these particles is critical.
